CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: 2026 FUNDING CYCLE
THE UNIVERSITY LANGUAGE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT OFFICE (ULPDO) invites urgent submissions of language project proposals for funding under the University Language Board (ULB) Grant.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The mission of the UniVersity Language Planning and Development Office is to embrace and foster functional bilingualism at UKZN through the promotion of equitable use of English language and isiZulu as provided for in the language policy (2006 revised in 2014). Thus, ULB seeks to develop and promote isiZulu to be the language of research, science and teaching and learning.
ULB is calling on all interested academics to apply for the ULB grant. The grant covers all the projects that are intended to implement the language policy and plan. The project should indicate its capacity and commitment, in the development of isiZulu or South African Sign Language in line with the UKZN language policy and plan. The proposals should be on the relevant language development projects including, Human Language Technologies (HLT’s), Terminology Development, Promotion of Bilingualism and Multilingualism, Curriculum Development, Language Research, Monitoring and Evaluation, etc.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ULB GRANT:
- To promote the project of curriculum transformation and intellectualization of African languages
- To cultivate and promote interdisciplinary research in the project of intellectualizing of African Languages
- To support and promote the digitalization of all African Languages
- To promote the development of technical terms in their respective domains
- To implement the Language Policy and Plan by promoting transformation and development of African languages

Impokophelo yeHhovisi LeNyuvesi LokuHlelwa NokuThuthukiswa KoLimi ukusingatha nokukhuthaza ubulimimbili e-UKZN ngokuggugquzela ukusetshenziswa ngokulinganayo kolimi lwesiNgisi kanye nolwesiZulu njengokuhlinzekelwa kwazo yinqubomgomo yolimi (yangonyaka wezi-2006 yabuyekezwe ngowezi-2014). Ngakho-ke i-ULB ihlose ukuthuthukisa nokugqugquzela ukusetshenziswa kolimi lwesiZulu njengolimi locwaningo, lwesayensi nezokufunda nokufundisa. I-ULB imema bonke abangabafundisi abanothando lwalo msebenzi ukuba bafake izicelo zoxhasomali lwe-ULB.
Lolu xhasomali lukhokhela yonke imisebenzi yocwaningo okuhloswe ngayo ukweseka ukusetshenziswa kwenqubomgomo nohlelo lolimi. Ucwaningo kufanele lukhombise ukuthi luzosithuthukisa kanjani isiZulu nolimi lwesimpawu lwaseNingizimu Afrika ngokuhambisana nenqubomgomo nohlelo lolimi lwase-UKZN.
OKUHLOSWE NGOXHASOMALI LWE-ULB:
• Ukugqugquzela uhlelo lokuguqulwa kwekharikhulamu nokwenziwa kwezilimi zase-Afrika zibe yizilimi zezifundiswa
• Ukukhuthaza nokugqugquzela ucwaningo oluxube imikhakha ekwenziweni kwezilimi zase-Afrika zibe yizilimi zezifundiswa.
• Ukweseka nokugqugquzela kokusetshenziswa kwezobuchwepheshe kuzo zonke izilimi zase-Afrika
• Ukugqugquzela ukuthuthukiswa kwamatemu emikhakha ehlukene.
• Ukusebenzisa iNqubomgomo noHlelo loLimi ngokukhuthaza uguquko nentuthuko yezlimi zese-Afrika
