Project description and motivation

Completing a dissertation or thesis is a pivotal achievement in the academic journey of postgraduate students. However, many students face persistent challenges such as low completion rates and underdeveloped research proposals, which often result in substandard dissertations or theses. These challenges not only impede individual academic progress but also affect the institution's overall research output and quality.

This project aims to address these issues by providing targeted, capacity-building support to postgraduate students. Through structured interventions focused on proposal development and research preparedness, the initiative seeks to enhance completion rates and significantly improve the quality of research proposals—ultimately leading to more robust and academically rigorous dissertations and theses.

Alignment of the project to the institution’s Strategic Plan

This project directly aligns with Goal 3 of UKZN’s Strategic Plan, which envisions the university as a globally ranked, research-intensive institution that actively addresses major social, economic, and environmental challenges. A core element of this goal is fostering a robust research culture in which academic staff are empowered and accountable for mentoring postgraduate students and cultivating future scholars.

By enhancing postgraduate research capacity and improving the quality of dissertations and theses, this initiative contributes to building UKZN’s reputation as a leading producer of impactful, contextually relevant knowledge. In doing so, it reinforces the university’s identity as the Premier University of African Scholarship, advancing both local development and global academic engagement.

Project goal To improve completion rates and research quality for Masters and PhD students.
