| Project description and motivation | UKZN recognises the critical role that seed funding plays in fostering the growth and success of emerging academics. These academics often face financial constraints that limit their ability to pursue research projects and engage in professional development opportunities. The seed funding will allow emerging academics to carry out research, develop their research profiles, support the students they supervise, and build a foundation for future funding opportunities. By providing financial support at this crucial stage, the project aims to cultivate a generation of independent researchers who will contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge in their respective fields. |
| Alignment of the project to the institution’s Strategic Plan | This project aligns with Goal 3: Excellent Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the UKZN Strategic Plan. UKZN aspires to be a globally ranked, research-intensive university that responds to major social, economic, and environmental challenges. To achieve this, the goal focuses on cultivating a research ethos that recognises the responsibility of academic staff to mentor and support their postgraduate students. It also aims to establish UKZN as a pre-eminent producer of new knowledge that is both locally grounded and globally relevant, defining the institution as the Premier University of African Scholarship. |
| Project goal | To promote research excellence and advancement among emerging academics. |
