Project description and motivation

UKZN faces challenges in securing research grants, low publication rates, and limited supervisory capacity. This project addresses these by enhancing grant writing, improving publication quality, and strengthening supervisory skills through targeted training and support. It also recognises the need for ongoing professional development of academic leaders and managers. By offering leadership workshops and collaborative research exchange programmes, the initiative fosters research excellence, inclusivity, and institutional growth. Collectively, these efforts aim to boost research output, improve postgraduate supervision, and advance academic leadership—ultimately enhancing the university’s reputation and contribution to high-impact, globally relevant knowledge production.

Alignment of the project to the institution’s Strategic Plan

This project aligns with Goal 3: Excellent Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the UKZN Strategic Plan. UKZN aspires to be a globally ranked, research-intensive university that responds to major social, economic, and environmental challenges. To achieve this, the goal focuses on building a strong research ethos that acknowledges the responsibility of academic staff to mentor their postgraduate students while positioning UKZN as a pre-eminent producer of new knowledge that is both locally relevant and globally impactful, ultimately defining the institution as the Premier University of African Scholarship.

Project goal To improve the quality and research productive capacity of emerging researchers at UKZN and foster International collaborative research networks; develop effective leadership skills and create awareness across the institution To develop staff capacity in research and leadership
