Project description and motivation

Between 2021 and 2023, over 69,000 UKZN students from Quintile 1–3 schools faced academic challenges due to poor language proficiency, especially in English and isiZulu. Simultaneously, many staff members lack competence in multilingual pedagogy and African languages. This project, led by the Language Development Office, addresses these issues through student language training, academic writing support, and staff development in language proficiency, cultural competence, and inclusive teaching. By fostering a multilingual and supportive environment, and integrating technology-enhanced pedagogies, the initiative aims to reduce attrition, improve learning outcomes, and advance equitable curriculum delivery across the institution.

Alignment of the project to the institution’s Strategic Plan

This project supports UKZN’s Strategic Plan 2023–2032, aligning with Goal 1: Excellent Teaching and Learning, which seeks to attract high-potential students and develop them into globally aware professionals, leaders, and citizens. It also aligns with Goal 2: Excellent Student Experience, which aims to produce graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and networks to build meaningful, adaptable careers throughout their lifetime.

Project goal To equip staff and students with multilingual proficiency, integrating cutting-edge language technological tools into teaching and learning practices, fostering transformative curriculum skills, and promoting multilingualism all facets of the institution.
