From 19 – 22 January 2026, emerging researchers gathered at Umhlanga Garden Court for a dynamic and highly focused Writing for Publication Retreat, designed to support academics who are close to completing their manuscripts but need structured guidance to finalise and submit their work. The writing mentors were Professor Paul Muzindutsi, Professor Andile Khathi and Professor Phocenah Nyatanga,
The four-day retreat provided a dedicated space for concentrated writing, mentorship, and peer engagement. Aimed at researchers on the “home stretch” of their manuscripts, the programme combined extended writing blocks with one-on-one mentorship from senior academics and structured peer-review sessions. This integrated approach ensured that participants not only refined their arguments but also strengthened the overall quality and coherence of their papers.
One participant shared:
“Thank you, UCDP. The facilitators were great. I liked that they also made themselves available to spend time and cater to every individual’s unique needs.”
Another participant highlighted the value of structured time and facilitation:
“The workshop was really well facilitated with adequate time for participants to work on their papers.”
The Writing for Publication Retreat reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to nurturing emerging scholars and strengthening research output. By combining mentorship, peer learning and protected writing time, the retreat equipped participants with the confidence, clarity and tools needed to successfully navigate the final steps toward publication.
