The Researcher’s Toolkit: Software Skills for Insightful Analysis

In response to the growing demand for advanced data analysis competencies in postgraduate research, the University Capacity Development Programme (UCDP) hosted the Research Software Skills Workshop for Master’s and PhD students. This intensive, hands-on workshop provided participants who are at or beyond the data collection phase with practical training in four vital research tools:

  • 9 June 2025 | SPSS | Dr Siyabonga Dlamini | Senate Chambers, Westville Campus
  • 10 June 2025 | NVIVO | Dr Amanda Gumede | Senate Chambers, Westville Campus
  • 11 -12 June 2025 | R & STATA | Dr Christian Tipoy | Online via Zoom

Through the expert-led sessions and real-world demonstrations, students gained valuable skills in both qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis. The workshop not only enhanced their technical proficiency but also empowered them to conduct more robust, insightful, and methodologically sound research.

A satisfied participant indicated that “the facilitator was very patient and friendly. He welcomed questions from everyone and tried to ensure that everyone was on the same page.“

Another participant noted that “the workshop was well structured, and the facilitator led active participation. She was patient and accommodating of all levels of participants.“
